Education Cell: An Update
It is my pleasure to
present report of activities of education Cell of USI.
Members of Education Cell had set some goal for this year
and I am happy that slowly and steadily but definitely we
are cruising on this path.
- We have completed the
database of the teaching institutions conducting M.Ch
and DNB courses in Urology in India. This has helped us
in direct communication with these institutions for
informing them educational programme conducted by USI.
This process is on going and we are trying to complete
this data in the form of Directory.
- Compiling database of
National Faculty in various subspecialities is in the
process. Dr. Rajeev Kumar and Dr. Madhu Agrawal are
working on this project
- Education Cell is trying
to co-ordinate all teaching activities under the aegis
of USI . The activities of 2009-2010 were presented in
our earlier newsletter. We are also working to prepare
calendar of events for the year 2010-2011 in advance to
enable PG students, members and Zonal Organisations to
plan out their activities in such a way to avoid clash
of dates and topics.
Continuous Urological
Education programme was very well organised by Dr. P. V. L.
N. Murthy at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences,
Hyderabad on 13th and 14th June 2009. More than 90 students
from all over India participated in the CUE. National and
Local Faculty conducted this CUE. Topics covered were:
- Case Discussion
- Panel Discussion on Ca
Prostate and Stricture Urethra
- Video Presentation on
various Surgical Techniques

This year with efforts of
President, Secretary and Education Cell seven Post Graduate
Students had an opportunity to attend International Teaching
Programme. Five students attended EAU teaching programme
held in Prague and two students attended Residents Urology
Course at Singapore. PG students were selected on the basis
of their CV, MCQ test held at Hyderabad and interview
conducted by senior teachers Dr SS Joshi, Dr P Venugopal and
Dr Ganesh Gopalakrishnan. With hard work and vision of
senior members and office bearers of earlier councils -
Education Bridge between USI and International Organisations
is strengthening all the time. Two of our students attended
the AUA Conference. Two junior faculty from AUA will be
visiting centers of Urology in India and will participate in
Annual USI Conference.
A circular was sent to all
the teaching institutions to know if they were willing to
participate in this faculty exchange programme between AUA
and USI. Seventeen Institutions have responded with list of
Subspecialities. We will be circulating this information
again on website/ newsletter for more centers to appraise of
this programme. This database will be provided to AUA
faculty who inturn will select institution of their choice
and make direct arrangements with those institutions.
USI-AUA Instructional
Course and Mock Exam for Urology Post Graduate Students was
conducted at the Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical
Sciences, Mumbai on 28th to 30th September 2009. This was
the first USI - AUA combined venture for Post Graduate
training in Urology in India.
More than 100 PG students
participated in the programme from all over India. This was
a good chance for them to practice and understand the
nuances of appearing for the final exam. This was 3 days of
intense teaching programme from 7.30 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. To
our satisfaction Auditorium was full all the time till the
last minute of the day. Mock Examination in the form of Case
Presentation, Uropathology, Instruments and Uroradiology was
conducted by panel of National Examiners for M.Ch and DNB
students. During this course students also appeared for
theory questions and answers were evaluated by panel of
examiners. American Urology Association's Board Review
Course was conducted by Four International Faculty - Dr
Gopal Badlani, Dr Richard Santucci, Dr Karim Kader and Dr
Ajay Nehra. We also conducted Self Assessment Study
Programme (SASP) prepared by AUA-School of Education. 150
MCQ questions were given to 2nd and 3rd year students doing
MCh and DNB in Urology. It was a novel experience for our
students but was received with great enthusiasm. MCQs were
given to PG students to assess their understanding of the
subject at the end of the teaching programme. Feedback forms
were given to PG students. PG students and Faculty have
expressed overall great satisfaction and encouraging
feedback about this course.
